Links just randomly appeared on home page?

I was styling my sidebox navigation and suddenly noticed just under my banner that the category links were placed there too (funny, geek, I love...). I don't know how I managed to do that and iv'e been trying to undo it but to no avail.

What caused them to appear, how do I fix it?

They are product subcategories.

They belong only in the navigation sidebox.
How can I stop them displaying in the main box?

admin->Configuration->Layout settings

Ive been through all that. Turned EVERYTHING on and off to see what it does and nothing to effect those subcategory links.

It's off, always has been off.

I just turned that on and it puts a subcategory bar ABOVE my banner, the links below also remain.

Ok then try....
admin->Configuration->Layout settings->Categories - Always Show on Main Page

Ok, that DID get rid of the links however...

It removed my product images too
and, it collapsed my navigation submenu (which I want open on page load)

What do you suggest?
