help question Database inserting into upgrade

Yesterday I got this message on my admin-page:
Deprecated: Function ereg() is deprecated in /var/www/vhosts/xxxxx.xx/httpdocs/includes/classes/db/mysql/query_factory.php on line 177
    The same for line 412
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare date_diff() in /var/www/vhosts/xxxxx.xx/httpdocs/admin(changed name withheld)/includes/functions/general.php on line 3001
I can not get into admin any more.

The host said 1.3.9 should work but there might be 1.3.8 core in it. In 2008 I installed 1.3.9b
So I presume an update to 1.5.1 is the short pain.

But I installed on a separate folder an new 1.5.1 Zen-Cart for safe trying. Uploading the DB did not work. I removed the DB and made it anew. This time while empty without any tables I could upload my old DB.
Then used the "upgrade DB" and got confused.
    The pre-marked options where 1.3.8 to 1.3.9 and 1.3.9 to 1.5.0 and 1.5.0 to 1.5.1
Should I do them separate or all together?
I will have to do things again because admin in the test area can not be reached and shop side it states: TEXT_ADMIN_DOWN_FOR_MAINTENANCE on the top of a reasonable shop look.

Can somebody say if I got the procedure right when I say:
Find changes with Winmerge between original 1.3.9 and shop version 1.3.9
Make these changes to 1.5.1 including add-ons
    upload files of changed 1.5.1
use zc_install only for DB update after uploading old DB into blank DB
but in one or more steps?

Correction: end 2008 it was 1.3.8a and I guess in April 2010 I did some update to 1.3.9a or b
This was possibly in the Admin screen. I don't remember any more.

Yup: 1.3.8 (circa 2006) is not compatible with contemporary (2013) versions of PHP.

1.3.9h should work. But not if you've got mixed 1.3.8 components in it also.

Either is fine. I usually do them all together nowadays.

Seems symptomatic of missing PHP files.
