help question local pc installation with XAMPP - error message

We've been using Zen Cart since 2007, but always paying someone to install upgrades and modules. So, while I'm familiar with using ZC, I'm not as familiar with the programming. I bought the TenTonOnline course which goes through both local and remote server installations.

I downloaded and installed the latest versions of XAMPP, MySql and ZC 1.5.1a. Following the instructions from TenTon, I got both XAAMP and MySQL running fine then I began the install of ZC. I changed the 2 dist-config.php files to config.php and got to the page which says "You are here because..." which led me to an error message telling me the path was incorrect. I used notepad++ to try to find where the path was wrong, but I don't have a clue if that's even the right place to look.

If anyone would be so kind as to tell me where I'm missing the mark, I'd appreciate it.

I have room on my host site to set up a sandbox, but I figure it's a whole lot faster to play around with modules, templates, etc. in the local environment. I'm also trying to follow the course outline. An email to TenTon last week went unanswered.

Can you be more specific about the exact complete message?

On the server locate the file: /catalog/includes/dist-configure.php
Rename this file to configure.php and change the permissions to 777 (read-write-execute for all)

Next, on the server locate the file: /catalog/admin/includes/dist-configure.php
Rename this file to configure.php and change the permissions to 777 (read-write-execute for all)

    The message is:

    Server error!

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

    Error 500

    localhost
    Apache/2.4.3 (Win32) OpenSSL/1.0.1c PHP/5.4.7

OK, so looking back over my installation, it's zen-cart-v1.5.1 (no a). Following the path to installation, it's C://localhost/xampp/zen-cart-v1.5.1. and the renamed files are configure.php, not config.php. Time to give it and me a rest for the night. I look forward for your reply and appreciate the previous one. Sorry to be such a pain.

Not sure which version of XAMPP you used. I don't use XAMPP so I can't offer direct assistance specific to XAMPP.

But I do know that "500 Internal Server Error" messages are caused by something going wrong on the server that the server's security settings prevent it from describing to-your-face-onscreen. Instead, the cause of the error is recorded in logs that only the server administrator (you) have access to. Explained in more detail here: http://www.zen-cart.com/content.php?...l-server-error

If you let XAMPP install to its default directory (c:/xampp), then your installation should be made to c:/xampp/htdocs/zen-cart-v1.5.1. That allows you to access your locally-hosted site by putting localhost/zen-cart-v1.5.1 into your browser's address input.

I usually keep the /includes/configure.php and MY_ADMIN/includes/configure.php files as they exist in my hosted version and use /includes/local/configure.php and MY_ADMIN/includes/local/configure.php to reflect my locally-hosted versions. Just remember to never upload these local versions or you're pretty-much guaranteed to get a Server-500 error!!! Here's the contents of my c:/xampp/htdocs/v1.5.1/includes/local/configure.php file:
    Code:
