Show out of stock at higher level?

I want customers to still see the products I offer so I can order if needed or they can backorder, but I don't want them to have to click on every item to find one in stock. Is there a way to display an out of stock status at a higher level such as a category, or something that is setup to change the main image of the product to an image with an out of stock overlay once quantity reaches 0?

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Zencart has functions that display an Out Of Stock message in the product listing and product info pages and a switch that allows you to determine whether a product that's out of stock still displays or not. The latter is in Admin - Configuration - Stock and the default is 0 - don't display.

Lets say I have Categories for product A, B, and C. For each of those there is multiple manufactures or models of that specific product. Zencart will list the items and I would like it to say out of stock on them, instead of the user have to go and click on each one to see it is out of stock.

Stock Icon from Plugins can be configured to do what you want. It will apply to all categories unless you add some custom coding.

If by "higher level" you do mean category product listing, and not a larger quantity of a product, then the stock ZC admin settings will do that. As long as you have the product listing set to show quantity in stock, you will get the out of stock message/image when appropriate. Stock Icon can simplify that to a green/yellow/red dot at any desired quantities if you like.

I don't see an out of stock message unless I am looking at the detailed item. On my item listing pages it shows the item and price, not stock quantities. This is in the public view, not admin.
