    Default My admin now requires double log-in

    I had added this to a previous question but I think it needs its own thread.

    I read this thread: http://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.p...ht=admin+login and checked the suggestions there. I will attempt to answer those questions here for ease of assistance.

    The problem only happens when I go to log in. There is nothing in the error logs folder for this. On the re-route from the Admin, the URL bar shows: "www.151sacredshowers.com/[my admin]/login.php?camefrom=index.php"

    The second log-in attempt always goes through. I have not been tossed out of the Admin so far. As I can tell, the config files appear to be okay. This problem has gone on since I installed 1.5.1. Database upgraded from 1.3.7 to 1.5.1 using the install/db upgrade system. No errors or problems that I know of during the upgrades.

    I would like to move forward with my upgrade as I am nearly finished but I think it would be best to resolve the issue before moving on in case another issue occurs with the next step, it might be easier to isolate.

    I know this issue is not the norm as my 1.3.7 site never required a double log in to access the Admin. No one here can assist me with cleaning up this issue? Really? Being intimately acquainted with the scripts, I would think those who wrote ZC would almost immediately have an idea about where the issue might be. I make superb soap, but becoming a software engineer will have to wait for a third career, after soap maker, and after law school.

    Everything I read online last night states support is provided via the forum so if you need help with Zen Cart, post your issue in the Forum and support will be provided. Perhaps I'm missing something but reading the Forum about Admin log-in issues alone has not provided a solution to this on-going problem. I don't even know if this issue has potential to cause future problems if it is not corrected now.

    I guess everything changes but I must say, I grieve the loss of the Forums and support folks who so graciously provided both their technical and moral support to help me get my website up and taking orders in January 2007 when I installed ZC for the first time.

    I can only speak for myself, but I've been here trying to help other Zenners since 2005, and I haven't noticed any dimunition of the quality of the support - the opposite, if anything, and criticizing the forum is never helpful.

    Just for the record, my habit here is:

    Click on the Newest Forum Posts link.

    Scroll down the list, ignoring the mod support threads for mods I haven't used, and any thread with more than 30 or so posts.

    I read, but seldom reply to, posts in threads about shipping and payment module issues. DrByte and Ajeh pretty much have those topics covered. I also read posts where another experienced Zenner is already trying to help, but seldom post unless I can think of a possible solution the other experienced person hasn't mentioned.

    Of what's left, I try to apply some kind of triage to decide who needs help the most, or whose question can be answered in the least amount of time. Obviously, if a Zenner's site or admin is unreachable, that post would get priority.

    Since you can log in to admin, but just have to do it twice, I would call that an annoyance rather than a serious problem.

    Nods in agreement..

    This issue is always expectations of what help SHOULD be in a volunteer based forum.. There are those who STILL view this forum as Microsoft-like customer service instead of what it really is.. Volunteers for an open source framework helping on their own free time.

    Nothing to add except this thread summarizes that this issue is really a non-issue and as you stated, more of an annoyance than anything..

    My post was a plea for help, and accurately reflects my experiences of the last few weeks with the questions/issues I have had regarding upgrading to 1.5.1 -- not once, but with each issue I posted (days without a reply in some cases). I was coming to the conclusion that my upgrade issues were lower on the hierarchy that some others posted. Nonetheless, that recognition does not resolve my upgrade issues.

    As for a double log-in being an annoyance rather than an issue, I did not know that having to log-in twice was part of the new 1.5.1 release. Had that been noted somewhere, I could have saved myself a great deal of time and frustration. I classified it as an issue since my 1.3.7 site allowed me access on the first attempt, and there are other threads here where folks had to log-in twice and/or were bounced from the Admin, and the issue for them was addressed and I assume, resolved to a one-shot log-in.

    For the record: I don't know what Microsoft help or any other IT customer service is like since I have never had the need to use it. (I lead a simple life and use only as much technology as I need to further that life.) My "expectations" are largely derived from my initial experiences in 2007 plus Kim's response to a complaint filed with the BBB in Klamath Falls, Oregon which stated that the customer-complainant should post the issue in the forum which would then provide customer support to solve the issue. That complaint and response is public record.

    Thank you the link. It sounds a lot like my experience although I have always left my 1.3.7 Admin in a tab and never had the issue. Must be something with the 1.5.1. I did a few searches using different search strings and that thread never came up. If it had, I would have been out of here.

    In case you're not out of here, 1.5.1 doesn't require a double admin login, and it's possible that the link or tab you were using with 1.3.7 didn't include the zenid, which seems to be what caused your issue with the new version.

    One problem is that the forum search doesn't include 'twice' as a search term, for some unknown reason. I used "admin login" double to find that thread.

    Right.. No one is doubting your experience.. I merely wanted to point out that this support forum is manned by VOLUNTEERS many of whom are simply users of this same open source package -- as is the norm when one is relying on a FREE OPEN SOURCE framework.. (which is why the BBB referred you to this forum) Posting a question doesn't guarantee an answer.. and there are MANY reasons why questions may go UN-answered on the forum..

    1. no-one has an answer to your question
    2. no-one WANTS to answer your question
    3. your question may be unclear
    4. people may be busy
    5. etc..


    This is the NATURE OF THE BEAST with free open source software (see the Joomla and WordPress forums as further examples of this).. In the years I've been here, I've learned to simply find alternative means to getting answers when a question goes UN-answered. That includes searching this forum and searching the internet in general.. If I find the answer, I don't criticize the fact that no one answered me, I just share the answer.. If I DON'T find the answer, I don't criticize the fact that no one answered me, I just look for alternatives or get more persistent..

    Yep.. this drove me crazy for the longest time until I found a similar post explaining the behavior:

    Linda's post summarizes what is happening..
    I have FireFox open with tabs and often have the same thing due to the session time out or the zenAdminID on the URL and I do the double login ... if I logout then login it goes right in ... if I delay more than 15 minutes or so, I will again have the double login ...

    I would not worry about this as it really is normal behavior, based on how you are accessing your Admin ...

    The BBB is not in the business of providing referrals; it is essentially a mediation service between consumers with complaints and the companies the consumer is complaining about. Thus, the BBB did not refer me to the forum. KIM, on behalf of Zen Ventures LLC, told the BBB in response to the complaint that the Forum is where customer support is provided. That record is available for public viewing.

    Your post explaining in detail how support is [or is not] provided in the Forum was informative and is excellent, helpful information for potential store owners exploring ZC as an option for their e-commerce website, a decision that, based on the above, should consider that owner's level of technical knowledge and/or time available for researching solutions outside the forum should it be necessary due to one of the above reasons for a lack of support.

    Should I have any other issues that I need to post a thread about, and I cross my fingers that I can now finish the upgrade, I will keep the information in mind. Thank you.
