additional (variable) handling fee on a per product basis

Is there a way to setup a product so that it has a varying handling fee that is added on to its shipping price before the order total is calculated?

For example, we have to charge an "oversize" fee (three different fee choices/prices based upon shipment method) to a particular product only when it's shipped, but if a customer opts to pick it up at the store then that fee is not added. Further, the three prices can be slightly different based upon the product being ordered because of size/weight etc.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give on shedding a light of where to look in making this possible with Zen Cart.

There are a handful of shipping modules (depending upon what shipping carrier you use) which can handle "dimensional weight" (shipping costs determined by both weight and dimensions). Who are your shipping carriers / countries? Are you dealing with international shipping?

Another alternative might be CEON Advanced Shipper. It just might include the ability to manually add "surcharges" to shipping (based upon product and shipping carrier).

We are in the US and only deal with US customers via USPS, UPS and Fedex. It's not the aspect of the weight really as it's just an little extra surcharge we have average calculated based on the product itself. That is why the fee varies from product to product.

I have already read over the CEON Advanced Shipper module and did not see that it allowed to do a 'surcharge' on a per product basis ... unless I missed that feature.

So the "oversize" charge does not come from the product being over a certain size based upon shipping dimensions? *scratches head*

If the "oversize" charge comes from handling instead... Probably would have to hand code something or look for a module which allows shipping surcharges based upon the product.

In Advanced Shipper you can define a separate shipping method (with specific costs and surcharges) per a category, manufacturer, product, order cost, weight, country...

This is good to hear ALMOST ... it's not a separate shipping method/cost issue on the per product basis. Instead it's our standard shipping methods with an additional 'handling' fee that various from product to product based upon shipping method chosen by the customer.

Would this plugin still work given that information?
