categories on the main page

Try admin--configure--layout settings--Categories - Always Show on Main Page

In addition, once you turn that switch on you're using this file:
includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/tpl_index_categories.php

which looks for:
includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/tpl_modules_category_row.php

and finds:
includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/tpl_columnar_display.php

The last one formats the output.

The <a> link is built with:
includes/modules/category_row.php

Also Configuration > Layout Settings > Main Page - Opens with Category > set to 0, if you want all of the top categories listed on the homepage center column.

yes did that seems to work,can u by the way instruct me on how to switch on/off monthly specials, new items,and such
it looks like they appear everytime i enter a new product ,i like to be in control and list specials when i want .

Configuration > Index Listing > many options.

"Specials" will only appear when you have something set to special.
