product descriptions disappear when saving

Hi
I am working with the site (http://combatterror.serightdesigns.com/store)
I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to update a product - and the admin screens all look find and I can see the product details until I save it and then everything disappears. The product is still there but the description disappears - on both the store side and the admin side.

And what it looks like after I tried to update it:

I am using v3.9 BUT I tried to update and the database wouldn't update and it was a mess so we had to do a restore. I didn't make any changes to this BEFORE this problem started happening - and it was about 10 days ago.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

v1.3.x is not compatible with PHP 5.4.x

because 1.3.9 is old, and php 5.4 was under development at the time 1.3.9 was released

would i have to toally upgrade or is there a more simple fix with a legacy version?
