....I think these issues provide a good (and usually sorely needed) opportunity to take a good look at your current site with an eye to stop using as many 'version appropriate add-ons' as possible.

Nods in agreement ! Whilst upgrading one of my client's sites we weeded out more 6 add-ons which were rarely or never used ..... GONE .....

The easiest way is to go to admin and see what mods are installed. Then, with each of these mods, stop and think: How often has this one been used? Do I really need it for admin or marketing purposes? If the answer is NO or RARELY then I would uninstall the mod BEFORE attempting to upgrade.

That's just how I would proceed.....
