Can I have a product made up of other products?

I look after a website and it sells parts to make models The user base is quite old and some of them can not even work out how to use excel spread sheets; which the site owner is currently using to take orders.

I have just installed the latest version of Zencart and was hoping I could generate "kits" from parts but I can not see that option. I have searched the forum and the web and found a post in 2006 which said it is not possible and one in 2009 that said it might be. I did not save the link to that post and can not find it again! Sometimes the problem is knowing what phrase to search for.

A quick explanation of my problem:

The users can buy any of the kit parts seperatly -> some like to make the parts rather than buy them as they can customise. The parts can go abroad and it can be cheaper to source some parts locally than have them shipped.
There are kits made up of parts e.g. "wheel set" which will contain 4 wheels, 4 tyres and 4 bearings.
The user can buy the whole kit in one go.

One other problem is there are "options" e.g. Standard tyres, town and country tyres or knobbly tyres. I would think if I can build up kits I could then build a kit with each variation of tyre.

My basic question is can I create a kit of parts from parts in Zen cart?

There's not, to my knowledge, an existing plugin that will provide kitting for your Zen Cart store. Custom programming to accomplish your needs would be the way to go.

I am not keen on modifying the code as when a new version comes out it may not work again - been there with a forum!
Plus it is probably beyond me.

I hoped somebody would be able to point me in the direction of a plugin if the option was not standard in zencart.
There is an admin demo on request; I will check with the website owner and see what he thinks and if he is interested I will ask for an admin demo.

You could try and attributes with zencart
(i'll probably get shot in the knee caps for saying this, but the feature you seek is a stock feature of prestashop. You can create products called 'Packs', I.e.: a computer start-up pack composed of the computer itself, a monitor, and a printer. PS makes it easy for you to create a "pack" product and add other products from your catalog to this pack.)

You might use something like cross sell. You could list the components separately and the kit as a separate product with the components as cross sell products.

Or list "build your own" kits with all products added as attributes.

I have had a quick go at attributes and it is quite confusing; I think I may wait until the weekend - I seem to be missing an option to pick or am doing something wrong.

You have some nice templates Anne and I have just tried installing one -Stirling grand - but I do not seem to have the carosel option under configuration. Anyway another job for the weekend.

I am not tied to any particular cart at the moment and had a look at prestashop ray-the-otter. But if you create a pack it does not carry over the price of the products into the pack price. I think it has a nicer feel and interface than zencart. zencart's admin section is old fashioned but as long as it works it is not a problem.

The zenbundles plugin looks good but if I am paying $150 for that I wonder if there is a commercial software with it built in for a similar price? I am always worried about plugins and version upgrades; again back to my forum experience.
