Is there a way of hiding or if not removing the about us page link from the information side box and also the footer?
if so can someone please point me in the right direction

Admin > Configuration > Define Page Status > Define About Us Status: set to your desired choice

Its the latest Zencart version 1.5.3
Its the Picaflor Ashley Pink Template I went with

If you go to the about us page its there just cannot see it in the define page status in configuration as shown on the attachment

It's not in my define page status either. Try admin>tools>EZ-Pages and see if it's defined in there.

The about us is in the tools, define pages section to be able to edit it as can be seen

My apologies, I took that info from a site with this plugin installed.

Open your includes/languages/english/extra_definitions/ashley_pink/about_us.php

and change

// this is used to display the text link in the "information" or other sidebox 
define('BOX_INFORMATION_ABOUT_US', 'About Us'); 

to this

// this is used to display the text link in the "information" or other sidebox 
// define('BOX_INFORMATION_ABOUT_US', 'About Us');
define('BOX_INFORMATION_ABOUT_US', '');
