Is it possible to make "shop by X" in Zen Cart?

I feel that I have to shook-up the site.

I do wonder is it possible to do like, shop by X in Zen Cart or I must do special maneuver/edit to make it possible?
I know you can shop by brand/Manufacturers. In Zen Cart, it came with scrollable list for shop by brand.

I am thinking of the following:
https://www.eurofurniture.com (Mega Menu heavy on this one)
http://www.tigermedical.com (I see their "Shop By Brand" has logos instead. I think Zen Cart may able to do that, just like the change to logo from text in product listing page.)

I tried some of responsive templates (Responsive Sheffield Blue is one of them), but I do think I have to change stuffs around. I don't want ALL categories stacking like nuts (that's actually what happened to the site, too many Lv1 categories?).

Something that crosses my mind is search queries for example which will not be dynamic links but manual ones that you will create using EZpages for example.
You can do a shop by price and use search queries for filtering price ranges and sort the items ascending etc'.

For example look at this query:
http://homepromedical.com/cart/index...pto=25&sort=3a

You can remove the unused parameters such as "&keyword=" for example if you don't want to filter by keywords.
sort=4a in the end makes it sort by price low to high, you can play with it and change to fit your needs.

The way I have my clients do this without code changes is to create a category of products called "shop by x". Then create subcategories for the x types under it. Once you've done that make copies of the products in the shop by subcategories as linked products. Beacause "shop by x" is a category it will show up in the category sidebox.
