Eliminate options for USPS module on certain items

Greetings: I've found some info, but really can't find my answer. Is there a simple way to eliminate a shipping option on just certain items? I have some items that are just to light to ship standard or priority so I want those to ship in a flat rate envelope. The trouble is I don't want that option showing on heavier items? I'm so sorry if the answer is out there and I can't find it.

How would you identify these Products?

Can they be identified by their master_categories_id?

If you have a method to identify these Products, then the USPS shipping module could be customized to turn off/on the various shipping methods ...

I have modified usps.php to look for certain master_category_id and/pr product_id to eliminate some flat-rate options Priority Mail options.
