Are there any guidelines to writing queries? Specifically, queries based on attribute

I need to know how many items with particular attributes have been ordered within a specific date period. I'm fairly savvy, but Data base ignorant. Is there a tool or a method somewhere that will help me structure my queries to pull the information I need?

For simple queries you can use phpmyadmin
For complex queries you'll probably find something like "MySQL workbench" or "RazorSQL" quite useful.
