Can't access admin with new install of 1.5.4

Hi,
I have been using 1.5.3 with no real problems and am wanting to upgrade so started by trying to create a fresh install of 1.5.4 which has yet to work.
I've tried numerous times with a few different fresh downloads and I always get the blank admin page. Have not yet found any answer for what's wrong with my set-up.
- tried clearing the browser and rebooting. Also tried different browsers.
- have no firewall set-up
- have no ssl certificate currently
- My server says it's php 5.4 - Hostgator - who say they have linux/windows servers?
- I am uploading using filezilla.

I've been trying for days and have been through the forum trying to find an answer but can't find a solution which works.

Am trying to download and instal a fresh version of zencart from scratch to see what the problem I'm having is.
I am using MAC app File Details to do a checksum validation of the file I've downloaded. I've down loaded it 5 times and it gives the same #'s every time but they are different from what they are supposed to be.
What site says they should be:
should_be.png
What I get:
what_is.png

Am I doing something wrong?

reinstalled and went back through the links you sent and got it going !!!!!
Turns out my host server was running php 5.2 despite saying otherwise. Upgraded and now it's working!!

Congratulations!

When you say that you upgraded, you meant that the store AND PHP were upgraded, correct? There should be help info at your host's site to explain how to adjust the PHP version if that has not been found yet.
