Default Authorize.net (AIM) - "Credit card number is required"

After clicking submit on the checkout confirmation page, I get:

Credit card number is required. - Your credit card could not be authorized for this reason. Please correct the information and try again or contact us for further assistance.

Sure enough, the AIM log shows

    [x_card_num] => XX

    which don't look too good.

The AIM module can only transmit what it successfully receives via the form submission.
Is there other ajax code interfering with the ajax used by checkout?
Is the HTML on the checkout_payment page broken due to alterations to template or by other plugins? In what ways are the any of the files in the /includes directory different than original ZC code?

All good questions - I will investigate. We had a successful cc run during testing with a test database, so I was thinking it might have been a bad configuration, but I am going to have to go through everything as you suggested. I haven't ever seen this specific issue before, and wondered if anyone else had.

Went through everything again and found no relevant changes. But when I turned off Admin-My Store-Configuration-PA-DSS Ajax Checkout, it worked. Does this give you any ideas?

Wild theory: the url parameter in these files

    ./templates/template_default/jscript/jscript_framework.php
    ./modules/pages/checkout_payment/jscript_main.php

does not account for the possibility that DIR_WS_CATALOG might be a subdirectory (such as "store" or "shop").

Did you have any joy in tracking this down? I am having a similar issue with Paypal Pro on a sub-directory installation. Before I wade into the javascript it would be nice to know that someone else got there first. Here's hoping ...

    Hi
I'm running 1.5.4 and until about 5 days ago was running in a subdirectory and using AIM with no problem. I also use PayPal express. I just moved out of the subdirectory for other reasons but I had no problem with either.

I actually just hit it again, and turned off AJAX checkout and it worked again. Not sure why.

@swguy, there are two issues at play: Make sure that you're using the /includes/templates/template_default/jscript/jscript_framework.php and /includes/classes/payment.php from the Zen Cart 1.5.5b distribution.

I think Cindy is right on the money here - this shouldn't happen unless you have a Frankenversion with mixed generations of files.
