Cannot access admin after resetting password

Greetings!
I followed instructions to the letter about how to reset the passwords, and when I tried to access the admin panel I get this:

0 DB_ERROR_NOT_CONNECTED
in:
[select * from zen_project_version WHERE project_version_key = 'Zen-Cart Database' ]
If you were entering information, press the BACK button in your browser and re-check the information you had entered to be sure you left no blank fields.

In trying to work with it I ran the SQL command a second time and the site stopped working altogether. I went in and fixed the configure.php files (both of them) and the site is working again but I still cannot connect to the admin.

This happened after trying the fix on the ZC website!

Please help, I have a lot of work to do today and I'm stuck until this is fixed...

Well... Assuming the information in the title of this thread is correct: 1.3.9.d, it may be that the php version has been upgraded beyond the ability of ZC to connect to the database... 1.3.9.d is a bit old which there is no problem with that provided the underlying software (PHP) and it are compatible...
