No Add to Cart on listing of products in sub-subcategory

One of my categories has subcategories in it. No products at that level, only subcategories. When viewing a product listing in any of those subcategories, the Add to Cart and quantity boxes are not showing. All other category product listings, which are all only one category deep, show the Add to Cart and Quantity boxes.

You can see this at chessieshop.com. The "Historical Archives" is the category with sub-categories where the products do not show the Add to Cart boxes. This is version 1.53, but I also see this behavior on a new redesign of the site using 1.54

Admin->Configuration->Product Listing->Display Product Price/Add to Cart = 3
Admin->Configuration->Product Listing->Display Product Add to Cart Button = 2
Admin->Configuration->Product Listing->Display Multiple Products Qty Box Status = 0

Am I missing a configuration setting somewhere?

NO you are not missing anything.

All those products have attributes that must be selected on the product_info page
before they can be "added to cart"

That is normal behaviour
