Database Update Issue

My ISP also updated their PHP 5.2 to 5.3 which caused my 1.3.8a cart stop functioning. I have downloaded ver. 1.5.4 and FTP'ed it into a new folder on my website. I then created a new SQL database for the new ver. 1.5.4. I then ran zc_install, corrected all errors until I had all green checks, entered all the correct new database info and achieved a successful install. I have removed the docs, extras and zc_install folders. I have renamed the admin folder and changed back the permissions on the (2) configuration files. How do I go about correctly getting all of the data from the 1.3.8a SQL database into the 1.5.4 SQL database. Should I have exported all of the data from the 1.3.8a database and imported it into the new 1.5.4 database before I ran the initial zc_install. If so is there a way to salvage this new install or start over? I would sincerely appreciate any help on this you may have to offer. Thank you in advance.

RJR, you can still (and should) run zc_install.

When you initially ran the zc_install, did you go down the upgrade path rather than the fresh-install path? If you went down the upgrade path, then all the information in your v1.3.8a database has been transformed for use with the v1.5.4 code-base.
