    Default Move categories and 301 redirect cpath

    Hello,
    i moved some larger categories with sub-categories to one category above.
    Should I 301 redirect the older cpath to the new cpath?

    Here's a scheme of what I did:

    1_2_3_4 -> 1_2_4
    1_2_3_5 -> 1_2_5

    Should I redirect via 301 or is it useless with cpath technology?
    • 1_2_3_4 to 1_2_4
    • 1_2_3 to 1_2_4? (_4 contains now the products of the older _3)
    • 1_2_3_5 to 1_2_5

    Default Re: Move categories and 301 redirect cpath

    Last time I looked at how tools such as google webmaster looked at categories (cPath) I thought the category was identified as something like a non-designating parameter meaning that redirecting the category portion wasn't much help as it was the products_id that defines the product regardless of the category designation. Of course each base category (showing the list of product has changed).

    That said, if you have a sitemap, then that should be updated to reflect the existence of the category(ies) though if new.

    There may be others that suggest otherwise. I just don't see the need...
