I just spent 3 hours installing an add-on that should have taken 10 minutes. Problem was I tend to skim what I read rather than everything! It's a bad habit I have.
My advice is read the instructions over 2-3 times before trying installation. I find if I read each line as I am doing the install there are no problems. A carpenter will say measure twice, cut once. Same applies here. Read twice or more, then install! A lot of questions and problems are caused by a bad install. Now I need to practice what I preach!
