Default What search terms to search for for dimensional weight?

I ship books. Someone can order ten books. Ten books don't fit into a small flate rate box, but small flat rate boxes get listed in the shipping options, and because it's the cheapest, they'll select the small flat rate box and our shipping gets gummed up.

I want to limit shipping options to appropriate volumes of items shipped vs. their shipping methods quoted.

What forum search terms do I need to search for to figure out what I need to do to overcome this? In the subject line, I suggested

    Dimensional weight

Is that right? I'm pretty sure it's nothing new.

    There's

    ozpost

but that's for Aussie shipping only, IIRC.

Strangely(?) I'd never come across the term "Dimensional weight" until quite recently (6-12months). Until then I'd known the same thing as being called 'cubing rules'.

So that's another possible search query, although I don't really think it is going to help any.

    Correct. Aust only.

I'm pretty sure that the USPS shipping module uses dimensional data, but I don't think it does exactly what you are seeking. There is also an 'advanced shipper' module that I'm pretty sure will do what you want, but the author of this module has passed away and I don't know its current status is.

    That's all I have.

If you want to add a ton of dependencies on other modules, Numinix offers a dimensional-shipping module. IIRC it mangles a bunch of core code though.

I use my own "weight" system to disable smaller USPS boxes as cart contents exceed the FR box capacities. Granted, our products are small but it works for 99% of our combinations of products. What size FR box (if any) will 10 books fit?
