Specials Page: Adding a description and category dropdown

Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered... I searched but could not find!

I'd like to make better use of the "Specials Page". To be clear, I mean the page that appears when you add this to the end of your store's domain:
/index.php?main_page=specials

There are two specific things I'd like to do.

FIRST
I'd like to be able to control what appears at the top of that page by adding a description, just as I can add a description to any category page. If I can add/change/alter the description of that page, I will turn it into a little sales flyer that changes according to my current special offers.

Does anybody know of a way to add Specials to the Define Pages Editor?

SECOND
I'd like to add a Category filter above the list. That simple addition would be EXTREMELY useful to a visitor (if I have 100 products on sale is 7 different categories, why force the visitor to scroll thru 5 pages to find what they want?).

Does anybody know how to do that?

Perhaps you should have posted in customization rather than setup. Also, you might want to answer all the Posting Tip questions. Especially mods installed.
