Products not showing up under category

this is a brand new install using the ########## theme. I uploaded 18 products using EasyPopulate. They seem to have uploaded fine as they are in the Products table. in Admin, the category shows up and shows 18 of 18 active. BUT when i click on the category, instead of seeing the 18 products, i see 'no products in this category'. So i manually added ONE product to that category and it is now the only one showing up under it, even though the category page now shows 19 or 19 active products. i compared fields on the product table to the new product i added and they all look similar to the other 18. i'm baffled as to why the other 18 don't show up in ADMIN nor on the website.
