Thanks for the compliment - the site is doing very well at this time of year - lots of kids get pets for xmas and we keep the webshop running over the festive season. Last year, on 25 and 26 December (on our old site) we had over 300 sales for these two days.
Installing a new template is not difficult - just make sure it is compatible with your ZC version.
Also, most people do not bother if there is a "radical" new look to a website, because they are more interested in speed, simplicity and logical functionality. With mobile devices not being used more often than desktops for shopping, the sooner customers can see the products the better. With the new site we have actually kept plugins to minimum, and those we have installed are largely admin tools. if the "radical change" makes life easier for people, they actually prefer it. The cosmetics of an e-commerce website are not really that important. Sure... it must look professional, clean and attractive, but with the new templates by Picaflor, the basics of a professional set up are done for you. Picaflor fills the templates with features, including things like scrolling carousel banners and various other trinkets, but it is easy to get rid of all this junk. Some people like banners, but our research shows they serve very little purpose. People usually do not wait around on the home page to see banners. They are not at the cinema... they are there to see products. We used banners for a good 2 - 3 years, then got rid of them completely. While we did not do any specific metrics, sales did not suffer at all. The rate of revenue increase remained pretty much as it was before - so why bother with banners that nobody looks at? Getting rid of them increased our pagespeed by over 20% on the home landing page, so itt's also better fr SEO.
Our new site is very much a "clone" of the original, flagship site, so the way we did this was to use Scott Wilson's (swguy) Mod Checker plugin. This lists all the plugins installed on a site and helps to determine where added and changed files occur. Then we chose which mods to keep (on the new site) and which to throw out - uninstall.
We then made a "copy" of the original site (files and dbase), moved it to its own domain and server, did a full upgrade to zc1.5.5b and then loaded all the plugins we needed. We also keep good notes of modifications we do over the years, so referring to these helped us tweak certain customisations.
The whole process took us less than 8 hours - ie: to get FUNCTIONALITYv perfect. There is no point working on cosmetics until you are sure everything works
Doing the cosmetics - mostly css - took about 2 hours, so all in all, we spent about 12 - 14 hours on this. Of course, one makes little fixes and changes, but the net result is a functional site that our customers like.
The JS images thing in your template should be a big concern. Lots of people browse google images for products and ideas. As google cannot crawl or index your images you could be losing potential customers.
