Coupons and gift certificates not working anymore

I disabled coupons and discount codes a few years ago, but now I need to use them and so I reinstalled them.
But when I do a test transaction, using a coupon, it's not applying it to the final cost in the checkout. Anything I can look into?

update - I realize now that the payment module that I paid a developer to create for AlignPay processor is probably what killed the coupon codes. When I revert to paypal express checkout, the coupons work again. Need to get someone to fix the mod so that coupons and gift certificates will work again.
