restricting media mail by master category USPS - 2017?

using V1.5.5d and most current USPS module.

have been looking for a solution to this issue for a while and took another stab at it last night, I have a couple of product categories that do not qualify for media mail shipping and if items in cart include any of those items I'd like media mail to be disabled automatically. I followed a few different threads on here from the past (the most recent from 2014) and followed directions on them but was unable to get it working properly. each time no matter what it killed the shipping estimator/was unable to continue to checkout .

I only use the USPS shipping module, no other shipping services, for my example:

master categories 1, 2 and 3 - if items from this category are in the cart and no other items from other categories = media mail is fine as these categories are 100% media mail items. any items from other categories not listed = no media mail

master categories 4 and 5 - if any items from this category are in the cart by (by themselves or mixed with other items from 1, 2 or 3 ) no media mail option.

any tips/pointers out there for how I could accomplish this? on my attempts last night I was editing the usps.php file located in /includes/modules/shipping/

were there other files/locations I needed to edit?

thank you Ajeh, I originally used that exact thread as my reference for working out my issue but was unsuccessful in doing so. I found that no matter what when I added in the appropriate code from your first post (just simply restricting one category to see if I could get it functioning properly) no matter what I did or how I did it, the moment I tried it, it would break the shipping estimate functionality and also upon checkout freeze that process.

I tried a few different things from that thread and others on the forum but still ran into the same problem, let me approach it with a fresh mind today and retry from the other thread again. thank you!
