Default Paypal error: "Things don't appear to be working at the moment"

    Hi,

some customers are reporting the following error while checking out with Paypal: "Things don't appear to be working at the moment. Please try again later"

The error happens after all paypal info has been submitted but before creating an order.
No changes have been made in the last 3 months. Error has been reported for 2 days now, and it does not happen everytime... I have not been able to reproduce it.
    Using 1.5.4

    Any ideas?

Which version of PayPal? Standard or Express Checkout?

You might try turning on the PayPal debug logging (one of the settings in your admin's Modules->Payment after selecting that payment method) to log-to-file. That way, if customers (or you) replicate the issue you've got some additional information that could lead to a proper resolution.

Perhaps the following (extracted from this PayPal blog post):

    IPN Verification Postback to HTTPS

If you are using PayPal’s Instant Payment Notification (IPN) service, you will need to ensure that HTTPS is used when posting the message back to PayPal for verification. After June of 2017 HTTP postbacks will no longer be supported.
