When changing admin folder after install, admin section of store changes

I installed a new version of 1.5.5e into a test directory and input all data and images. When we were ready to go, I created new install in "store" directory, then restored a copy of the test db.

Everything worked fine until I changed the admin directory name. I can still log in, but the admin page is a long vertical list of links rather than the interface previously used (ie the drop down menus).

Have deleted store and tried twice but still happens when I change admin directory. Does this have something to do with the admin directory in the test store (it is the same name I'm changing it to ... so I don't understand how that would be a factor). Am I doing somehting wrong?

PS Is it possible I'm missing a step between install of 1.5.5e in the "store" directory, and restoring the "teststore" db into it? I did try to run zc_install after to see if it wanted to upgrade, but it only gave me a "clean install" option and said it was a live store.

Also, if there was a problem with renaming the directory, why does it let me log in? It just changed the login screen from blue to yellow, and jacked up the admin area as described previously.

Is it example.com/store/ or store.example.com

Is the live site, test install and store install all using different database names? If not they need to be.

Okay ... I'm using subdomains so there is store.domain.org and teststore.domain.org.

Database is french_zctest for TestStore. I backed it up using cPanel, then restored it into french_store db. So they do have separate names.

(Sidenote: We originally had a store in store.domain.org but it was version 1.2.x and after weeks of trying to upgrade it, finally decided on new install and re-enter all products, etc. We did that in TestStore. Then I even double-check with a testteststore (lol) and it worked fine but somehow in store.domain.org it is screwed up)

So it sounds like the css file is not loading for the "store" site Admin section. Between looking at error logs in the 'logs' dir. and your Apache error log in your Hosting account and using a Browser Developer tool (F12), you should be able to sort things out.

So ... I'm pretty new at this. I looked up how to find my error log on the server and appear to have both an access log and error log in the LOG section. The error log is stuck on "loading". I do have the access log as follows but other than that, I am really stuck. I have no idea how to use the tool you mentioned. Any direction would be gratefully appreciated:

ADDENDUM: Was able to find error log in the logs directory of store ... do you think it's a permissions issue? I've checked that all the folders are set to 775 and files to 664

Yes, it's a failed load of CSS files. But you won't have any error-logs for it.

Load your Admin page.
Right-click somewhere on the page, and choose "Inspect" (Various browsers call it different things)
Then in the developer tools menu that opens, choose "Network", and you'll see all the files that get loaded for the page, including images, css, javascript etc.
For the failed CSS file, you should see an error ... probably a 404 Not Found ... and you can also dig deeper to find out the exact URL it's trying to load it from. Get that.

Then also look at the <base href> URL.

How are the two URLs different?

Normally they should be similar, ie:
http://example.com/admin/
and
http://example.com/admin/includes/stylesheet.css

It's very possible that your use of subdomains is confusing the auto-detection script that builds the URLs for the Admin.

Is this use of subdomains ONLY for testing? If so, the problem is likely to go away when you dump the subdomain and go direct.

So, after installing a test of the store in all sorts of other subdomains and having no problem, I was super frustrated that it rendered improperly in "store" -- the one subdomain I needed it in!

Turns out this had a very easy fix ... I needed to clean out my cache. (Yes, I feel dumb. Learn from my mistakes, people, if you are installing a new store in an old directory!)
