Obviously cpanel is wrong, or you would not get this error. Check in your Zen Cart admin with pressing the version button to see what your actual php version is .

Use your admin's Tools->Server/Version Info. What PHP version does that show?

    Correct!

Shop shows 5.3.29 - that is annoying to have the Cpanel show something else.

Yes it is. Now try switching between php version in cpanel, and see is the problem resolves, because if the php version is 5.5 or above you should be fine

While should be using 5.6 or above, it was actually in 5.4 that the square bracket (short array) syntax was introduced per the php online docs: http://php.net/manual/en/language.types.array.php

The system default PHP version is set by the system administrator.
Any domain that is set to the inherit value indicates that it does not have its own PHP version explicitly set. Read more about inherit.

Looks like I will have to get the server guys to check this out for me.

I have to go out for a few hours but will return later tonight.

    many thanks for the help.

    I appreciate.

Check the root directory for your shop, making sure that you don't have a php.ini file there that is specifying that down-level version of PHP.

Another place to check (but the cPanel "should" decode those) is the site's root-directory .htaccess file to make sure that there aren't directives that are forcing that PHP version.

Update (since I recently ran into this on a client's site): Within your admin's Tools->Server/Version Info, check the value for Loaded Configuration File (towards the top of the list). That's normally not within your site-specific directories; if found, try renaming to php.ini~ and re-run that tool to see if anything changes.

    Thanks.

    No php.ini spotted
.htaccess does not show PHP version.

    Server/Version

    Virtual Directory Support disabled
    Configuration File (php.ini) Path /opt/alt/php53/etc
    Loaded Configuration File /opt/alt/php53/etc/php.ini
Scan this dir for additional .ini files /opt/alt/php53/link/conf
    Additional .ini files parsed /opt/alt/php53/link/conf/alt_php.ini
I cannot see the /opt/ files, but it is likely to be hidden from me.

I am not long in, off to bed now and an early start tomorrow. If I get time I will do a write-up and send it to the server people for help. If they get it sorted then I will note the resolution here for others.

    thanks again for the assistance.
