Default How to modify Zen Cart from Admin Panel

New to Zen Cart. Took over from a guy who died.

Many of the PlugIns refer to adding/modifying Zen Cart files, i.e. includes, etc. from the Admin Panel.

If this is possible, I haven't been able to find how to do it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Sorry for the loss.

    Ok, quick break down.

Most of the files can only be modified using FTP (file transfer protocol). There are a few exceptions: the define pages which can be modified from tools->define pages editor.

Another "exception" to editing files is the upload/replacement of images in the images directory.

Otherwise, the admin allows changing settings that affect the database and/or what is seen on the catalog side (what the customer sees).

There is a FAQ section to this forum that offers relatively straight forward answers to "basic" questions. These questions are relatively broken into useful categories/areas; however, there are some such questions that probably could be served better by being in more than one area... ie. there are some that might be better served under say new user type questions or what every zencart user should know...

At any rate, even though some of these are "basic" they can be combined or applied in series to accomplish desired goals.

It's unfortunate that this has been turned over to you at this point because one thing recommended to do is to upgrade the site to ensure continued operation. (recommended procedure described here: http://www.zen-cart.com/entry.php?3-...d-of-upgrading). But seeing as you have a functional site (supposedly) would suggest first trying to learn the basics first. Ideally you have some form of programming experience, but it's not a necessity. The forum is available for questions and answers to questions. Just try to narrow down the issue to a manageable task/discussion and the clearer the question and desired action the easier one is able to answer when/if they can. :)

    Thanks for the reply.

In trying to install includes, etc. from the Admin Panel, I was specifically referring to the install instructions with DBio-1.4.0, a plugin found on the Zen Cart site.

    It goes as follows:

Rename the YOUR_ADMIN folder to match your custom admin folder's name.

Sign into your Zen Cart's admin panel.

Copy the plugin's files to your store's folder structure:

    /YOUR_ADMIN/dbio_manager.php

    /YOUR_ADMIN/dbio_customize.php (Added in v1.2.0)

    More Stuff Here -

    /YOUR_ADMIN/dbio/*.*

    /YOUR_ADMIN/includes/languages/english/dbio/*.*

    /YOUR_ADMIN/includes/languages/english/extra_definitions/dbio_admin_extra_definitions.php

Click the "Admin Home" link in your Zen Cart's top admin menu. This action will cause the plugin's installation script to run.

I may be reading it wrong but it sure seems to be saying that all these changes/additions can be made from the Admin Panel.

FTP is never mentioned, so is it just assumed?

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes it is assumed that one is aware that file transfer requires the use of ftp. It certainly could be a comment worthy in the forum thread related to that plugin to further improve the instructions.

For understanding, the reason the instructions are provided in that sequence is so that the admin user sees the results of the "auto" installation. Supposedly (and the installation software may have since been modified) if the software was first loaded and then an admin logged in that the related installation messages would spit out but because the login process involves redirects and other operations, the user (admin) would not be given the opportunity to see the message(s).

Now the same may be true even if/when following the instructions if the file upload process takes so long that the admin user has timed out. But, I would say that in either case that there would not be an operational problem, just wouldn't be able to see the initial installation status message(s).

Those files need to be uploaded to your site via FTP ... copying those files to your store's folder/directory/file-system.
