shipping options according to item

So I have some items that can be shipped by firstclass letter. others require shipping in larger envelops. How can I set this up?

There are a number of ways. Detailed answers come from detailed data. (meaning, if you want specific code suggestions, then provide more information about your setup)

You can go through each product and identify the method(s) to be used, you can have product associated with a specific category or product that have a master category assigned to a specific category or any number of factors associated with the product (a new field, another database table, etc...) one question to be answered is what happens if an order contains both a product that is to be shipped by first class letter and one that is to be shipped by larger envelopes? How many product shipped as first class cause the order to be by larger envelop?

You can use the weight of each product and setup the different weights for the different USPS classes in the USPS shipping setup.

Ie: first class envelope product less than 2/10 pound. Anything greater than 2/10 pound ships via 1st class thick envelope. And onward for the different flat rate boxes.
