If you hadn't seen before/elsewhere, be sure to use/try multiple search tools. While the information in this forum may be great, finding it using the forum's search tools may not always be so good/easy. There are plenty of search engines out there specifically designed to find pages/content. Be sure to use them as well. The similar threads surprisingly are not usually too bad, which seems unusual as compared to a site search...

As to winmerge, I haven't used it in a few years because I bought into beyond compare, but generally speaking php files are text files, perhaps the biggest "issue" when doing compares are two fold: line endings and whether to evaluate or not non-significant content.

Comparing goes a bit easier if line endings are ignored. Ignoring non-significant text can make it a little easier to find real changes, but care should also be taken as sometimes javascript related content will be commented out in a way to appear as non-significant, but there is actually a change that was needed to be incorporated...

As I recall, these factors are switch settings in the software.

It can as described there and there is more to it as well. I was going to reference that topic, but also didn't want to overload too much. There are other considerations as well such as when ftping from/to locations where the program is able to set/reset line endings, the choice of editor and it's assignment of line endings, etc...

Step one though was to address basic use of winmerge.
