I can not find in the installation guide whether there is a database change from 1.5.5f to 1.5.6a. The announcement for 1.5.6a says no changes from 1.5.6 to 1.5.6a but that and the December announcement of 1.5.6 and the installation guide are all silent on the question of upgrading from 1.5.5f. Can anyone clarify?

See the Zen Cart 1.5.6/1.5.6a distributions' /zc_install/sql/updates/mysql_upgrade_zencart_156.sql for the database changes going from 1.5.5->1.5.6.

lat9 has pointed out where to "see" the changes.
But you should NEVER run those changes manually.
You should run zc_install as per the upgrade documentation, and it will take care of running the necessary SQL changes to upgrade your database..
