404 Error /index.php not found

I'm getting 404 errors when clicking on anything on the main page. Each error says index.php not found, but the file is definitely there. This is on MAMP 4.5 development system, php 7.2.1, Apache 2.2. Server log files don't even record the request, but requests for the main page elements are in the logs. ZC v1.5.5f works fine on same development system and same virtual host. File permissions on index.php in both zc versions are the same (644). No .htaccess rewriting going on; no .htaccess files at the top level directory. Index.php files are identical for both zc versions and unchanged from out-of-the-box. No php errors. Admin works fine. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

You might want to check the includes/configure.php. Might have missed a directory in there somewhere.

Comparing its settings to those in the YOUR_ ADMIN/includes/configure.php might help reveal the bad link.

The most common reason for one to work and not the other.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The /includes/configure.php file had an error in it. I was sure the catalog side had worked before, but I guess not.
