Is there a way to include Smart Payment Buttons with PayPal Express Checkout?

It's been nearly 5 years since PayPal deprecated the Express Checkout in favor of the smart buttons (aka Paypal Checkout). Express Checkout will of course be keep supported for a very long time, but no new features have been /will be added.
I think that a payment module for Paypal Smart Buttons - which is now the default payment integration offered by PayPal - should be needed, I guess as a standalone module since it's a different thing from Express Checkout...

I believe DrByte has offered to develop such with appropriate financial backing. Understand that with development follows support. :/ I don't recall where the discussion was, but he had posted some suggested numbers.
