    Nothing wrong with that. Take a look at https://www.zen-cart.com/content.php...-files-folders

    Most folks now run suPHP which works with 755 vs 777

    I'm wondering whether this Hostgator behavior will have "adverse" affects on plugins that introduce additional sub-directories (e.g. IH's /bmz_cache).

    Should be ok. Apache will run as the userid that owns DIR_WS_CATALOG so it will be able to create folders.

    It's just that I've seen (but can't remember when) issues where files/directories that are auto-created by plugins are mysteriously not visible.

    I just had a case where a fellow Zenner couldn't get ZX OI running. Directories WERE created and were visible, but couldn't access it.
    Code:
    mkdir(DIR_IMAGES_OPTIMIZED . $name[0], 0755, true);
    The directory was created with 644 permissions and even FTP couldn't "open" it. user/group were correct, tho, and manually changing permissions to 755 fixed it. Wonder if it's related?

    That sure sounds like the situation I'd come across, essentially a very hidden directory.

    I had set permissions to 777 based on the Zen Cart installation instructions. I am just passing this along in hopes that it helps other HostGator users.

    Good for folks to know.

    You mentioned the installation instructions. Often times, folks will stop reading before finishing the instructions. Sometimes from the "yeah, I knew that" mindset or they see a Set Permissions on folders section, scan and see 777, then proceed on.

    The instructions at https://www.zen-cart.com/content.php...stall-zen-cart read.

    Some folders and files need special "writable" permissions for use in Zen Cart. "Writable" typically requires 777 permission. (Your hosting company may only allow 755 as writable, and using 777 may cause blank screens when accessing your site. In that case, use 755. Ask your hosting company for direction.)
    I think all off us here have "bailed out" of instructions and proceeded on for one reason or another.

    A good opportunity to stress RTFI - Read The Full Instructions.

    At least you broke the shrink wrap
