How do i tell the customer his item is dispatched?
I have done the invoices but this does not seem to have a button for despatch.

You can add a new orders-status (Shipped) using your admin's Localization->Orders Status tool.
Then go to the admin's Customers->Orders and update the order's status to 'Shipped' making sure that you set the Notify Customer selection to Email.
Thanks for that I am surprised I had to add shipped.
I use it now and send messages with the shipped message.
