If you can write up *exactly* what you did wrong and a possible detection strategy as a Github issue for the project, next time folks look at the installer, they can see if they can add your requested enhancement. (I can't figure out from your explanation above what went wrong.)

The cart was in the folder named catalog. I installed the new version in the root, moved the config files and did not change the path in either one. Then got no message or error log alerting me to a problem. It just stopped. You need more?The full-time Zen Cart Guru. WizTech4ZC.com

So the old catalog folder was still there with the files intact? Then it won't be easy to guard against, since it's legitimate to have multiple installations under one hosting account.

no the issue was the incorrect path in the config file. That happened because I changed the folder but didn't change the config file path. Not about multiple installations.

In that case, check the site's "root" error_log directory/file ... any issues detected during the zc_install process will be recorded there.
