Is there a plugin / module that can help with product selection?

Hi all, I run a store that specialises in industrial adhesives, sealants and allied chemicals. I'm wondering if there is a plugin that can aid customers with selecting the correct product for a specific job based on criteria they select.

What I am envisaging is like an advanced search page where the customer can tick boxes or select substrates from a pulldown menu, for example, I would like to bond Wood to Wood or I would like to bond glass to metal, etc. Then an additional series of tick boxes for product properties such as waterproof, non-flammable, uV resistant, etc. so they would end up with search results that are very specific to their needs.

I had a look through the plugins page but could not see anything that would work straight out of the box. I'm assuming i'd need to have additional fields for products to store information such as whether an item is waterproof, non-flammable, etc or is it possible this can be done by searching meta tags?

One that somewhat comes to mind as far as "out-of-the-box" relates to the use of attributes and filtering by attributes. I think it would minimize the amount of "work" to implement, though sounds like would want to be sure to have and apply usable and meaningful attributes.

This is correct. You'll need to add data to each product that will support the kind of filtering you want to add.
