Can't run installer

I have decided to upgrade to 1.5.6. 1.5.4 has been running flawlessly for 4 years, except the coupon date couldn't be updated past 2018.
Everything was working.... Now when I try to access the installer - it asked me if I want to save or edit index.php. same thing on site root and in admin.
I've never seen this before.
I even tried uploading to a different (new) folder. same thing.
My host is hostmonster. it seems that it's up to date on things.

What method of installation are you trying to use to apply the updated version? Is it an autoinstaller provided by your host?

I uploaded the entire package with FTP into the previous folder and then again into a new folder. Both behave the same way.

The request to replace the index.php file or edit it has nothing to do with the zen cart installer as provided by Zen cart say on this forum site at the main page.

Now, in the process of uploading the files via ftp, overwriting a file such as index.php, yes might get asked if want to save/replace that file, but not during the zc_install process...

I followed the installation instructions to the "T" PHP is 7.3.17. Apache is 2.4.43. MySQL is 5.7.23-23. It just doesn't appear to know what to do with a PHP file. Could .htaccess be a problem?

Yes there could be a problem with the htaccess file. The fact that php files are not executable is a factor of the host's configuration and what is needed to execute php files. A simple php file could be put together to use as a "sample" of verifying operation/use of php, though that shouldn't be necessary if php in Geral can be executed.

Will try to look into help files for your host, but also hopefully someone else that has worked with that host more may respond quickly. Whatever the case, posting the solution here will help someone else that has the same issue.
