I need help with the basics

I'm back to using Zen-Cart 1.5.6c and am starting from scratch.
I want to make the common changes like the Welcome Guest and the Congratulations modifications but as I read it's recommended to use Google to search for help, the help I found in doing so did not give me the result I'm looking for.
I'm wondering if it's to do with the new template as I'm not using the Contemporary Green one.
I would guess there is an area here that would give me the help I need in getting rid of the Welcome Guest and Congratulations messages but I also want to change the logo at the top of the main page etc.
I did try to search on the site here but as it stated, it's useless.
Can someone please point me in the right direction again? I used Zen-Cart before but that was many years ago and only the green template was being used.

If it isn't found there, then the FAQs area of this forum site which does actually have a decent search feature/result works.

Keep in mind as items are desired to be changed to think about/consider the template override system. Doesn't seem like a big deal or of concern now, but it makes a difference when going for the upgrade.

i would encourage you to be more specific with regards to what you did and what did not work.

there was a lot of work done to make the new the latest ZC documentation accurate and user friendly. if it is incorrect, then i'm sure someone would want to change so that it is accurate.

Since i removed 156 and did a fresh install of 157 I moved my issue to a more appropriate forum since it was no longer a upgrade related issue.
