PHP Version: 5.3

A few days back, the server updated the PHP to version 7.1
Since then the site is showing this error:
Call to undefined function: mysql_connect(). Please install the MySQL Connector for PHP

I cannot access the backend also.
Please suggest a solution.

Upgrade ZC version. As a temporary measure (though may be hard to encourage them to do this at this point) is to downgrade the php version while working the upgrade.

You could also go through your code and find out where mysql_connect is being called.
Back in Zen Cart version 1.5.2 it was all changed to mysqli_connect (note the "i"). So if you're using 1.5.4 then likely you've got customizations or plugins that are doing their own thing instead of leveraging Zen Cart's database access. Maybe removing/disabling those things might give you relief.
