Should it be 777?

I am upgrading to v1.5.7 and in reading the docs (Storeowner Docs/Installing/Permissions on files and folders) under "Using FTP" it states to change permissions to 755 which when I checked they already were 755 but then down the page under "Using SSH" it says to change those same folders to 777. I thought this was a conflict or a typo in the documentation, So which one is it?

nowadays 755 is best.

Older servers in times past needed 777 because of older technical limitations, but 777 was always a bad idea from a security standpoint.
