I have used much the same code. But have put it in its own template/module and then included it in tpl_index_categories.php.

The reason for that is that most people seem to want to keep the subcategory links as well, which I think might get lost in the method DrByte mentioned. So, putting it all in its own file allows it to be slotted in wherever people want.

Indeed.
And v157 has some notifier hooks built-in which make some of these code changes even simpler to extract out to separate code. And the index_filters were restructured to be simpler to customize.

I have a plugin that I'll release soon called "View All" which removes pagination from a product listing page and shows all the entries. Not sure if this is what you want.
