Default MOD vs ADDON vs PLUGIN

    Good evening everyone.

I'm about to work on my first ZC installation.

Surfing around the forums and the ZC documentation, I noticed this 3 terms: MOD, ADDON and PLUGIN.
Because English is not my native language, I want to make sure what I understand correctly that, these are 3 different names for the same thing.

Is this correct or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for your help.
    Greetings from México,
    JC

Welcome to the Zen Cart community! You are correct, the terms mod, addon and plugin all mean the same thing. They are, essentially, additional software you can install to customize the look and/or operation of your website.

We are trying to standardize around "plugin" in the documentation.

But don't assume ANY of them are actually plugins....until fairly recently it was almost impossible to add additional code with some modification to the core code.
Quality varies "widely"....it is open source and anyone can submit a plugin.

Always assume ANY third-party code will break your shop and eat your children...so always try out everything on a duplicate version of your shop first, whether on a hosting or a local computer and you will generally avoid seeing the horror of the white screen of death instead of your profitable shop.

    lat9, Swguy and Trovista,

I am grateful for your answers and advice.
I'll try to stay away, as much as possible, from low quality and unmaintained plugins.

And thanks for keeping ZC alive !!!

Note that "you" (all of you reading this) are the ones who need to make the low quality/unmaintained plugins better and so keep ZC alive, not the few who answer questions here.
I can answer some questions precisely because I took the time to improve some old plugins, and learnt in the process. There is no better way to learn.

And if don't find that able to directly modify/revise the trouble code, bringing the issue to light or through someone that can make the change will do as described above. Can't believe I'm going to say this, but through each other's help we can do this together... No one person can keep up with each and every thing nor find all of the issues.
