All received around 2-5 secs after each other, for just over 50second period.
    nothing in logs.

Fortunately if they all have the same PayPal Transaction ID and timestamp, that indicates there's only one payment that's been collected.

Given that they all happened within a 50-second time period it would suggest something technical caused it (as opposed to something the customer/shopper did, like refreshing their browser a dozen times).
Unfortunately nothing in the usual checkout flow would cause things to repeat themselves on a 2-5 second interval for 50 seconds.

Aside: I rule out IPNs because the IPN handler normally just ignores Express Checkout notifications because the store receives those directly inline during the checkout flow. (You said you're using ZC v1.5.6). And IPNs aren't sent in such rapid succession.

You didn't mention whether you (or your customer) received a dozen order-confirmation emails from your store about the identical transaction. It would be helpful to know which confirmation emails you got: did you get the "first" one? Or the "last" one? (you'd know by the order number on the email) There might be clues in that.

You said "nothing in logs", so I'm assuming you mean no PHP Fatal Errors were recorded, thus it wasn't an application failure for which the customer tried to do something on their end to fix (again, for example refreshing their browser a bunch of times).

But in the absence of any logs suggesting technical failures, it more likely does fall back at the customer side.
What's the customer saying about their experience?

    Thanks for response.

    Customer says experience as expected.
Yes, 17 order confirmation emails were sent out with incremental order number. 17 seperate orders created on server.
Orders before and after, working fine.
    Its a really weird one..

Just a follow up, happened again a couple of days back, 6 seconds between the duplicates.
as before same transaction id and timing. same website, but hosted now on a fresh new dedicated server.
first order logged 2 seconds after paypal transaction time, second order another 4 seconds after that.

Hi, thanks for response, we don't use hosting company, we have our own physical dedicated LAMP server in a datacentre.
However, issue happened on old server and new server (we've just moved everything to a new box - old one had reqached 13 years of service - so new apache new debian etc)
Issue did also occur when site temporarily placed onto a shared hosting at 20i.
So pretty certain can rule out server/hosting config.

Looking through google, other carts seem to suffer this issue when an expired card is used to pay and is rejected, then the second card is used and is sucessful. also if rapidfire button pushing is done by client, or loss of connection during transaction. i also wonder whether the new paypal authorisation request using txt message during login might be causing....

had another example of it just this morning, 7 seconds inbetween the duplicate orders.
