Upgrade path or reinstall?

A long time ago, I had upgraded my store as there was a "simple" upgrade path, a link to upgrade automatically.
A few years ago, I had to do a complete reinstall of my site to upgrade to 1.5.5
Now, if I want to upgrade to 1.5.7, is there such a "simple" upgrade path or do I have to reinstall again? Or do I really need it yet?

Leave the site running and create a test folder to install 1.5.7c and any mods you want to use.

Guaranteed that 90+% of mods will have been upgraded AND lots of change from 1.5.5 to current.

You are always better off with the latest version.
