Those are actually banners within those sideboxes. You can read about them here:

You may be better off switching the template to CLASSIC RESPONSIVE, as this RESPONSIVE version is designed to render on hand-held devices as well as on conventional computer screens.
My advice (before you tinker with the original CLASSIC template), would be to switch to CLASSIC RESPONSIVE.
(There are lots of posts and tutorials on how to switch templates)
Then... spend some time looking at how to configure the myriad of display options relative to this template.
Depending on what you are selling (and therefore your target audience) how you ultimately "structure" all these display options plays an important part in the "User Experience" of your website.
Today, MOST consumers use hand-held devices to do online shopping. So if Mr and Mrs "average" are your customers, the chances are they are looking at your site on a phone or tablet. In these cases, the "sideboxes" are irrelevant - as they are NOT displayed in the CLASSIC RESPONSIVE template, on smartphones.
    -----------------------
One of the best ways to see how others will see your site, is to call it upon YOUR smartphone... If it looks like a mess to YOU, it will be a mess for everybody else too.
    -------------------------
Use the CLASSIC RESPONSIVE template... That's the first thing you need to do.

The OP is using responsive_classic which is both responsive to mobile and way more compatible to ADA/WCAG compatibility.

As it is the confusion may be in the fact that it is a demo load.

To which sideboxes are you wanting to add images?

I ask because, for example, any images in the "Featured" sidebox are just smaller versions of a featured-product's image and are set when you create/update the product itself.

In admin, click on the link in the upper right hand corner or on the hamburger menu that is titled version.

The information (PHP version) is provided in the upper area of the resulting page.
