upgrading from 1.5.6. have not run database script yet in case this server can't handle 1.5.8. php is supposed to be 7.3. I don't trust this server as the folks "managing it" are not the pros I prefer.
Any ideas?

so 1.5.8 will not run on this server. I was able to restore the 1.5.6 version. Then installed 1.5.8 in a subfolder and get the 500 error. I'm not seeing what is missing on the server (my eyes are crossing looking at the details!). What has changed between 1.5.6 (and maybe even 1.5.7) that could cause this from server settings?

This must be it: Database Engine: MySQL 5.7.41 where requirement is: Zen Cart v1.5.8 requires MySQL 5.7.8+ or MariaDB 10.2.7+

What debug logs are generated in attempt to install?
At what point in installation is the 500 error occurring, e.g. attempting to access site/zc_install or just the site itself?
Attempted to use the in process revision that includes addressing already identified issues with the original release found at: https://github.com/ZenCart/ZenCart/tree/v158?
Looked at the identified issues with Zen Cart 1.5.8 found at: https://www.zen-cart.com/showthread....-v1-5-8-series ?

no logs due to it seems to be the database level. If there were error logs I couldn't have figured out (!), I would have posted them

Based on these two postings, I don't see how database level is an issue. From what I understand, your database is: mysql 5.7.41, that is larger than 5.7.8 and therefore exceeds the minimum requirement and is identified as acceptable until the active mysql database is at a version that is not supported by the current code.
As to asking about error logs, there was no description identifying that 1) they didn't exist or 2) that they were sought or considered. That question had now been answered, though would expect the server itself to have error logs identifying why the 500 error occurred or other supporting information.

so server is upgraded to php 8.1 and mysql 8. Problem still exists. While doing the server changes, they did run into a problem with a corrupted linux GRUB loader. So am I just looking at unknown server issues? How in the world can I figure this out? He installed php 8.1 and removed all others so can't revert.

and there are no error logs available in this cpanel account - no in the log folder nor in the root/logs

Noting that there are a number of files present in a zc156 installation that are no longer used in zc158. While I can't explain why the issue that you're having, it might be due to a duplicate function name or something of that ilk.
It would help to know how far in the installation process you got before the Server 500 (aka PHP error) occurred.
